How to Add Google Search Console to Your Domain

Updated this week

Google Search Console is a free tool that helps you see how your website is doing in Google search results. It also lets you know if there are any problems that need fixing so your site can show up properly on Google.

Follow the steps below to connect your domain to Google Search Console.

Step 1: Open Google Search Console

  1. Sign in with your Google account (for example, your Gmail login).

Step 2: Start Adding Your Website

  1. On the screen, you’ll see two boxes: Domain and URL prefix.

  2. Click on the box that says Domain.

  3. Type your website address (for example: yourdomain.com — don’t include https or www).

  4. Click Continue.

Step 3: Verify You Own the Domain

You’ll now need to prove that you own the domain. There are two ways this might happen:

Option 1: Automatic Verification

If your domain is managed with a supported provider like GoDaddy or Ionos, Google may offer to verify it automatically.

  1. Click Start verification when prompted.

  2. You’ll be asked to sign in to your domain provider account.

  3. Approve the connection — and that’s it! Google will handle the rest.

Option 2: Manual Verification

If automatic verification isn’t available:

  1. Google will show you a special code (called a TXT record).

  2. Leave this page open.

  3. Go to where your domain is managed (for example, GoDaddy, Namecheap or Google Domains).

  4. Find the DNS settings or DNS management section.

  5. Add a new TXT record:

    • Type: TXT

    • Name/Host: @ or leave blank (depending on your provider)

    • Value: Paste the code Google gave you

  6. Save your changes.

Step 4: Click Verify

  1. Go back to Google Search Console.

  2. Click Verify.

  3. You’ll see a success message if it’s worked. If not, wait a few minutes and try again — sometimes it takes a little while to update.
